Weekly Work Journal — Self-Directed Planning
The elementary reasoning mind wants to own its own schedule. The journal makes planning visible and revisable. An empty Friday page is the honest control. Indirect aim: executive function, self-assessment, preparation for secondary-school autonomy.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Practical Life — Elementary
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Plan the week's work across subjects
- Reflect daily on progress
- Adjust the plan mid-week
- Review with a guide on Friday
Materials
- Bound work journal
- Weekly plan template (Mon-Fri, rows for subjects)
- Pencil and revision pen
- Friday review checklist
Instructions
1. Every Monday morning, draft the week's work plan. 2. Break each subject into specific pieces (not 'math' but 'fractions chapter 4'). 3. Each day, check off what's done. 4. Note what slipped and why. 5. Mid-week, adjust the plan if needed. 6. On Friday, review with a guide. 7. Identify patterns: am I strong in planning or weak? 8. Archive the week; start fresh Monday.
Educator tip
The Friday review is where learning happens, not the Monday plan. Ask: 'What would you change about next week's plan?'
Assessment
Observe planning realism, honesty of reflection, and plan improvements over weeks.
