Emergency Preparedness — Fire Drill Plan
Elementary children can hold real responsibility for safety. The drill is the control — a confused or slow response reveals the plan's weakness. Indirect aim: civic duty, calm under pressure, leadership for younger peers.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Practical Life — Elementary
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Learn and lead a fire drill procedure
- Identify escape routes and meeting points
- Check extinguishers and smoke alarms monthly
- Train younger children on the plan
Materials
- Classroom floor plan with exits marked
- Fire extinguisher and smoke alarm documentation
- Drill log
- Meeting-point map outside the building
Instructions
1. Study the floor plan; identify two escape routes from each room. 2. Walk each route with the class. 3. Identify the outside meeting point. 4. Test smoke alarms monthly (with adult). 5. Check extinguisher gauges monthly. 6. Run a drill each month; log the time. 7. After the drill, discuss what went well and what didn't. 8. Train new children on the plan.
Educator tip
Drills aren't theatre — take them seriously. A too-casual drill trains casual responses.
Assessment
Observe calm execution, accurate route-finding, and the quality of post-drill discussion.
