Maintenance Log — Classroom Tools and Materials
A Montessori classroom is a living archive of materials. Quarterly upkeep keeps it alive. A missing piece or broken material is the control — work can't happen. Indirect aim: stewardship, the long view of keeping a community's resources.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Audit every classroom material quarterly
- Log wear, damage, and missing pieces
- Repair or replace as needed
- Hand over the log to the next steward
Materials
- Master materials inventory
- Quarterly audit checklist
- Repair kit (glue, sandpaper, replacement pieces)
- Maintenance log book
Instructions
1. Quarterly, two children take the master inventory. 2. Audit each shelf: count pieces, check condition. 3. Log anything broken, missing, or worn. 4. For repairable items, fix immediately. 5. For missing pieces, note and flag for reorder. 6. File the audit in the maintenance book. 7. At handover, walk the next pair through the system. 8. Celebrate: the classroom is whole again.
Educator tip
This is the quiet work that keeps Montessori running. Honor it publicly at class meeting — without it, nothing functions.
Assessment
Observe audit thoroughness, repair quality, and handover clarity.
