Hosting a Class Debate
Upper-elementary children love intellectual combat with real rules. The structure is the control — off-topic or rude arguments are called out. Indirect aim: critical thinking, civic discourse, preparation for secondary debate and democratic life.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Practical Life — Elementary
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Research both sides of a meaningful question
- Argue for one side in a structured debate
- Listen respectfully to the opposition
- Vote or reflect on the strongest argument
Materials
- Debate topic card
- Research folders for each side
- Timer
- Debate structure chart (opening, rebuttal, close)
- Reflection journal
Instructions
1. Choose a debatable question with two defensible sides. 2. Split the class into two teams; assign sides. 3. Teams research for two days. 4. Debate structure: 3-min openings each, 2-min rebuttals, 1-min closes. 5. Judge asks clarifying questions. 6. Class votes not on who they agree with, but who argued best. 7. Reflect: what was the strongest point from each side? 8. File the debate notes in the class archive.
Educator tip
The reflection step is the whole lesson. Separating 'my position' from 'strong argument' is a civic skill children can keep for life.
Assessment
Observe research depth, debate structure adherence, listening quality, and reflection insight.
