Cataloging the Class Library — Dewey Introduction
Upper-elementary children meet Dewey as classification genius. Each number tells where knowledge sits. A misfiled book is the control — it's lost until found again. Indirect aim: information literacy, preparation for public libraries and research.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Sort class books into Dewey Decimal categories (000-900)
- Label each book with a call number
- Shelve in order and maintain the system
- Train peers to use the system

- Label stickers and pens
- Shelf dividers for each category
- Check-out log
Instructions
1. Survey the class library; count books. 2. Introduce Dewey categories 000-900 with the chart. 3. For each book, assign its category (100s philosophy, 500s science, etc.). 4. Label spine with call number. 5. Shelve in numerical order within each category. 6. Create a check-out log. 7. Train classmates on the system. 8. Quarterly, audit for misfiled books.
Educator tip
A visit to a public library shows the system at full scale. Many upper-elementary children become library volunteers after this work.
