Sweeping the Floor
Sweeping gives the child real work on a real surface and a clear visible result. The marked target square gives a spatial goal that directs the broom; debris outside the square is the control.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Use a child-sized broom to gather debris into a dustpan
- Work in a systematic pattern from edges inward
- Respect a chalk or tape 'target square' as a gathering point
- Complete and restore the work without prompting
Materials
- Child-sized broom
- Small dustpan and hand brush
- Chalk or tape to mark a target square
- Small dust receptacle
Instructions
1. Mark a small target square on the floor with chalk or tape. 2. Take the broom and start at an outer edge of the area. 3. With small, controlled strokes, sweep debris toward the target square. 4. Work systematically around the perimeter, then inward. 5. When all debris is gathered on the square, set the broom aside. 6. Hold the dustpan against the floor with one hand and use the hand brush with the other to sweep the pile into the pan. 7. Empty the dustpan into the receptacle. 8. Wipe the target square clean. 9. Return broom, pan, and brush to their places.
Educator tip
Sprinkle a few rice grains or coffee grounds to create real debris to gather. Reset the target square after each use so the chalk line stays visible.
Assessment
Observe the systematic pattern, whether the target square is respected, and whether the work is fully restored.
