Folding Real Laundry
Once the child has mastered folding cloths with guide lines, they extend the skill to real laundry. The work takes the child from preparation to meaningful contribution: the folded towel is used tomorrow by a classmate.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Fold towels, shirts, and napkins using standard methods
- Sort folded items into stacks by type
- Contribute to the ongoing care of the classroom
- Extend the folding cloths work into real-world application
Materials
- Basket of clean, washed classroom laundry (napkins, towels, cloths)
- Flat folding surface or table
- Sorting baskets or a shelf
Instructions
1. Bring the laundry basket to the folding table. 2. Take the first item and identify its type (napkin, towel, cloth). 3. Smooth it flat on the table, with any logo or pattern facing down. 4. Fold in thirds or halves depending on item type, matching corners exactly. 5. Smooth each fold with flat palms. 6. Stack by type. 7. Repeat for each item in the basket. 8. When the basket is empty, carry the stacks to their shelves. 9. Return the empty basket to the laundry area.
Educator tip
Demonstrate a consistent fold per item type so every child's work matches. A pattern taught once becomes the community standard.
Assessment
Observe precision of corner-matching, consistency of folds within a stack, and thoroughness across the basket.
