Preparing a Simple Salad
Preparing a shared salad integrates many practical life skills — washing, tearing, cutting, mixing, serving — and gives the child a meaningful contribution to the community meal. Every step has visible consequences: grit left on lettuce, chunks too large, dressing pools.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Food Preparation
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Wash, tear, and combine salad ingredients
- Use a simple dressing responsibly
- Serve the prepared salad to the community
- Complete a multi-item food preparation cycle
Materials
- Salad bowl and tongs or wooden spoons
- Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber
- Small pitcher of dressing
- Cutting board and child-safe knife
- Colander, apron, compost bowl
- Serving plates and napkins
Instructions
1. Put on the apron and wash hands. 2. Wash each lettuce leaf under running water in the colander. 3. Tear lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place in the bowl. 4. Halve the cherry tomatoes on the cutting board and add to the bowl. 5. Slice the cucumber into rounds and add. 6. Place any trimmings in the compost bowl. 7. Pour dressing lightly over the salad and toss with tongs. 8. Carry the bowl to the community table and serve onto plates. 9. Clean the preparation area fully and restore all tools.
Educator tip
Keep the recipe simple and seasonal. Let children rotate the preparation so each learns the full cycle over the term.
Assessment
Note hygiene (hand washing), hand position on the knife, restraint with dressing, and care in serving.
