Polishing Wood
Wood polishing is quieter than silver polishing — the transformation subtler, the scent warmer. The grain deepens, the surface glows. A streak remaining is visible under oblique light.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Polish a real wooden object to enhance its grain
- Use natural oils or beeswax respectfully
- Complete a multi-step work cycle with a drying pause
- Appreciate the beauty revealed by care
Materials
- Polishing tray
- Apron
- Small jar of natural wood oil or beeswax paste
- Soft cloths
- Small wooden object (candlestick, box, frame)
Instructions
1. Put on the apron and bring the tray to a table. 2. Open the oil/wax jar. 3. Dip a corner of the cloth in the oil (a little goes far). 4. Rub the oil into the wood in the direction of the grain. 5. Cover the entire surface with a thin film. 6. Wait quietly for the oil to penetrate. 7. Buff with a dry cloth until the surface gleams. 8. Inspect in natural light for streaks. 9. Restore the jar, cloths, and object.
Educator tip
Use a small amount — too much oil leaves residue. Store oiled cloths safely (some oils can spontaneously combust).
Assessment
Note restraint with oil, attention to grain direction, and quality of the final gleam.
