Dusting a Shelf
Dusting a shelf is the care of every material the child loves. It meets the sensitive period for order — the objects must return exactly as they were found. Dust remaining is visible; objects misplaced are felt by the community.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 4-5
Objectives
- Remove objects, dust the shelf systematically, and restore objects to exact positions
- Develop care and respect for community materials
- Practice systematic left-to-right, top-to-bottom work
- Sustain attention across many small steps
Materials
- Small apron
- Soft dusting cloth
- Small feather duster
- Tray for temporarily holding objects
Instructions
1. Put on the apron. 2. Bring the tray and cloth to the shelf. 3. Starting at the left edge, carefully move each object onto the tray in order. 4. With the cloth, wipe the shelf from left to right in overlapping strokes. 5. Wipe the front edge and any raised surfaces. 6. Inspect for any missed dust. 7. Starting from the left of the tray, replace each object in its exact original position. 8. Return the tray and cloth. 9. Remove and hang the apron.
Educator tip
Before the child starts, quietly note to yourself the arrangement on the shelf. Resist the urge to correct their restoration — the order is theirs to preserve.
Assessment
Observe the fidelity of restoration, systematic wiping pattern, and completion of the full cycle.
