Growing Patterns
Growing patterns introduce the concept of change and rate—key algebraic ideas that extend beyond simple repetition.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Patterns
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Recognize patterns that increase
- Predict next terms
- Build algebraic thinking
Materials
- Unifix cubes
- Counters
- Recording sheet
- Number cards
Instructions
1. Build with cubes: 1, 3, 5, 7... 2. 'How many cubes in the next tower?' 3. 'What's the rule?' (add 2 each time) 4. Predict the 6th, 7th, 8th term. 5. Record in table: position vs. quantity. 6. Try other growing patterns: 2, 4, 6, 8... 7. Create own growing pattern.
Educator tip
The table recording connects growing patterns to early function concepts. 'When the position is 5, the quantity is...'
Assessment
Child identifies the growth rule and predicts future terms.
