Estimation Station
Estimation builds number sense by requiring children to think about reasonable quantities without counting, a crucial real-world mathematical skill.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Problem Solving
- Level: Ages 3-6
Objectives
- Develop estimation skills
- Use benchmarks for reasonable estimates
- Refine estimates with feedback
Materials
- Estimation jar with objects
- Recording cards
- Benchmark quantities (groups of 10, 50)
- Reveal label
Instructions
1. Fill jar with objects. 'How many do you think are inside?' 2. Record estimate on card. 3. Show benchmark: 'Here are 10. Now what do you think?' 4. Revise estimate. 5. Count to verify. 6. Compare estimates to actual. 7. Discuss strategies for better estimates.
Educator tip
Change the estimation jar weekly. Vary object sizes—large objects make the jar look fuller with fewer items.
Assessment
Child makes reasonable estimates and improves with benchmark information.
