- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Money
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Identify coins by name
- Know the value of each coin
- Compare coin values
Materials
- Play coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)
- Coin cards with values
- Sorting mat
- Magnifying glass
Instructions
1. Present each coin. Name it. 2. 'A penny is worth 1 cent. A nickel is worth 5 cents.' 3. Three-period lesson for names and values. 4. Sort coins by type. 5. Order by value. 6. 'How many pennies equal one nickel?' Count to verify. 7. Play store with priced items.
Educator tip
The confusing aspect of money is that size doesn't equal value (dime < nickel in size but in value). Address this explicitly.
