- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Solve problems requiring two operations
- Identify steps in problem solving
- Develop mathematical reasoning
Materials
- Problem cards
- Golden Beads or Stamp Game
- Paper for recording
- Drawing materials
Instructions
1. Read: 'Maria has 243 beads. She buys 158 more, then gives 87 to her friend. How many does she have now?' 2. 'What do we do first?' (Add) 3. Solve step 1: 243 + 158 = 401. 4. 'Then what?' (Subtract) 5. Solve step 2: 401 - 87 = 314. 6. Answer in complete sentence. 7. Draw picture to verify.
Educator tip
Teach children to underline key words and draw a diagram before calculating. Planning prevents errors.
Assessment
