Word Study — Prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-, in-, mis-)

Prefixes are grammatical atoms — small, meaningful, combinable. The child who knows 'pre-' means 'before' can decode prepaid, preview, preheat without looking up a single word. Indirect aim: vocabulary expansion, spelling confidence, and the etymological mindset that English is built from pieces.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Lay the prefix cards in a row with their meanings. 2. Match root word 'do': add un- → undo; re- → redo; pre- → predo (not a word — why?). 3. Continue with 'play', 'write', 'place'. 4. Record new words formed; discuss which are real English. 5. Read a paragraph; circle every prefixed word. 6. Make a chart: prefix | meaning | example. 7. Challenge: combine two prefixes (disagree + able = disagreeable — wait, that's suffix-and-prefix). 8. File the chart in the Word Study binder.

Educator tip

Keep a 'prefix wall' in the classroom; add discoveries. The wall becomes a living dictionary by term's end.

Assessment

Observe prefix recognition, accurate combination, and growing speed in decoding unfamiliar prefixed words in reading.
