Grammar Box 3 — Detective Adjective Game
The Detective Adjective Game shows that adjectives specify. Each added adjective narrows the possible referent. The control is the guessed object — right or wrong. Indirect aim: precision of language, semantic specification, preparation for formal description in writing.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Grammar Boxes
- Level: Ages 6-8
Objectives
- Use adjectives to narrow down a hidden object
- Build noun phrases with stacked adjectives
- Experience how each adjective narrows reference
- Compose descriptive language in writing
Materials
- Grammar Box 3
- Detective cards (hidden-object clues)
- Noun strips and adjective strips
- Miniature objects or a shelf of classroom items
Instructions
1. Place a tray of six similar objects (three red balls, one blue, two green). 2. Draw a noun: 'ball'. 3. Add adjective 'red' — three balls still possible. 4. Add 'large' — one ball remains. 5. Add 'striped' — now only one. 6. Point to it. 7. Reverse game: child picks object, writes adjectives to narrow. 8. Move to written descriptions of classroom objects.
Educator tip
The game is playful — keep it so. Adding too many adjectives becomes a game of over-specification; let children discover 'just enough'.
Assessment
Observe adjective precision, willingness to add specifiers until unique, and transfer to writing.
