Word Study — Latin Roots (ped, port, scrib, spect, dict)

Upper-elementary children discover that academic English is mostly Latin and Greek. Once a child knows 'spect = look', they decode inspect, respect, spectator, prospect, perspective, spectacle — a lifetime of vocabulary. Indirect aim: scientific literacy, preparation for Latin study, joy in etymology.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Present the root card 'spect' — meaning 'look'. 2. Brainstorm words containing spect: inspect, respect, spectator, prospect, perspective, spectacle. 3. For each, analyze: prefix + root + suffix. 4. Match to meaning: inspect = look in; respect = look back. 5. Repeat with ped, port, scrib, dict. 6. Create a word-family chart for one root. 7. Find each root in a science textbook or news article. 8. Present findings at a Word Study share circle.

Educator tip

The etymology dictionary is a joy, not a chore. Buy a good one and let children dive. Many children who 'don't like reading' find they love etymology.

Assessment

Observe accurate root identification, richness of word families generated, and transfer to unfamiliar academic vocabulary.
