Sentence Analysis Stage 2 — Indirect Object & Adverbial Phrases
Stage 2 analysis reveals that a sentence is a constellation — the predicate at the center, and satellites orbiting: who, whom, where, when, why, how. Upper-elementary children want this richness. Indirect aim: clause-level syntax, preparation for foreign-language sentence structure, and the analytical reading of literature.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Sentence Analysis
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Extend analysis to indirect object (To whom? For whom?)
- Identify adverbial phrases: where, when, how, why, with what, how much
- Use the stage 2 chart with branching arrows
- Analyze complex sentences from literature
Materials
- Sentence Analysis chart (stage 2) with seven adverbial branches
- Colored circles and ribbons for each role
- Sentence strips with adverbial phrases

- A favorite classroom book
Instructions
1. Review stage 1 with a short sentence. 2. Read: 'Yesterday, the boy kicked the ball to his friend in the park'. 3. Place 'kicked' (predicate), 'the boy' (subject), 'the ball' (direct object). 4. Ask: To whom? 'to his friend' — place in indirect-object slot. 5. Ask: Where? 'in the park' — adverbial of place. 6. Ask: When? 'yesterday' — adverbial of time. 7. Draw arrows; read the full analysis aloud. 8. Select a sentence from literature; analyze together.
Educator tip
Seven questions is a lot. Introduce three at a time: where/when/how. Add the rest as the child's appetite demands.
Assessment
Observe handling of multi-part sentences, correct identification of adverbial types, and the child's ability to analyze their own writing.
