Grammar Box 8 — The Pronoun

The pronoun stands in for the noun — same family, new work. The color purple visually echoes the noun-family blues while signaling difference. Indirect aim: referential clarity in writing, study of case and agreement, preparation for Latin and Romance-language study.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Present the purple pyramid alongside the black noun pyramid — same shape, different color, related meaning. 2. Tell the story: 'When the noun has been said, the pronoun can stand in its place — faster, lighter, pointing back'. 3. Read a sentence strip: 'John gave John's book to John's friend'. 4. Replace repeated nouns with pronouns: 'John gave his book to his friend'. 5. Place purple symbols above each pronoun. 6. Classify: personal (he), possessive (his), reflexive (himself), demonstrative (this). 7. Draw command cards: 'Rewrite this paragraph using pronouns where helpful'. 8. Compare before and after.

Educator tip

Ambiguous pronouns ('he said he saw him') are the lurking danger. Show a paragraph where it isn't clear who 'he' is — children spot the problem instantly and learn to name antecedents.

Assessment

Observe correct classification, effective pronoun use in revision, and attention to antecedent clarity.
