Grammar Box 1 — The Article
The grammar boxes isolate one part of speech at a time. Box 1 introduces the article as the noun's close attendant. Indirect aim: the child meets function words gently before the heavy lifting of verb and predicate. The box's compartments are the control — each symbol has its slot.
- Framework: Montessori

Materials
- Grammar Box 1 with compartments for article (light blue triangle), noun (black triangle), and word strips
- Small slips of paper and pencil
Instructions
1. Open Grammar Box 1 and identify the compartments. 2. Place the black noun triangle and the small light-blue article triangle in place. 3. Read a phrase from a slip: 'the lion.' 4. Place 'lion' under the black triangle, 'the' under the light-blue triangle. 5. Read aloud: 'the lion — a noun with its article.' 6. Introduce 'a' and 'an' as indefinite articles. 7. Work through many phrases: 'an apple', 'the river', 'a star'. 8. Mark articles and nouns on paper with the respective symbols. 9. Close the box by returning symbols and strips.
Educator tip
Emphasize that articles always travel with nouns — they never stand alone. Hunt for articles in stories.
Assessment
Note whether the child places each word under the correct symbol, and whether they recognize articles in new sentences.
