Detective Adjective Game

The detective game reveals the true function of adjectives: each one eliminates possibilities. From dozens of cards, 'the large, red, striped triangle' points to exactly one. The child becomes a language detective — and the revealed card is the control.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Spread all the picture cards on a rug. 2. Give the child the magnifying glass. 3. Read a description card: 'Find the small, blue, spotted circle.' 4. The child searches and identifies the one card that matches every adjective. 5. Verify by checking each adjective against the card. 6. Discuss: how did each adjective narrow the search? 7. Let the child write description cards for others. 8. Play with partners, one reading, one searching. 9. Extend to real classroom objects.

Educator tip

Let children write their own description cards — generating adjectives is as important as identifying them.

Assessment

Note whether the child systematically uses each adjective to narrow the search, and whether they write clear descriptions for peers.
