Sentence Analysis — Second Stage (Direct Object)
After identifying subject and verb, the next question is 'what?' — and the answer is the direct object. The white circle at the arrowhead represents the object receiving the action. This analysis makes sentence architecture visible.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Sentence Analysis
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Identify the direct object in a transitive sentence
- Use the correct arrow and circle placement in the sentence analysis material
- Ask 'what?' or 'whom?' after the verb to locate the direct object
- Extend simple analysis to direct-object sentences
Materials
- Sentence analysis set: red arrows, black circles (subject), white circles (direct object), question stems
- Sentence strips with transitive sentences
- Paper and colored pencils
Instructions
1. Place a red arrow at center. 2. Read: 'The farmer plants the corn.' 3. Ask: 'What is the action?' → 'plants' on the arrow. 4. Ask: 'Who plants?' → 'farmer' on a black circle at the tail. 5. Ask: 'Plants what?' → 'corn' on a white circle at the arrowhead. 6. Read the whole sentence symbolically: subject → verb → direct object. 7. Record the analysis on paper with colored circles and arrows. 8. Work through ten sentences. 9. Note that intransitive sentences have no direct object — only subject and verb.
Educator tip
Build up slowly: simple sentences first, then with adjectives and articles, then with indirect objects in the next lesson.
Assessment
Note accurate placement, correct use of questions, and ability to analyze new sentences on paper.
