Word Study — Latin and Greek Roots

Elementary children delight in the architecture of words. A child who knows 'bio' means life and 'graph' means writing can decode biography, biology, and autograph. The root unlocks a family. Misinterpretations are the control — 'biology' literally means 'study of life,' and the child's prior decoding either matches the dictionary or doesn't.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Present the root chart. 2. Choose a root: 'aqua' (Latin for water). 3. List words containing it: aquarium, aqueduct, aquatic, aquamarine. 4. Predict meanings before verifying. 5. Try 'tele' (Greek for far): telephone (far-sound), television (far-sight), telescope. 6. Build word families for each root. 7. Check with etymology dictionary. 8. Challenge: decode an unknown word like 'hydrology' by its roots. 9. Record favorite discoveries in a personal root journal.

Educator tip

Children love the detective feel. Start a class wall of roots; children add new words they discover. Celebrate connections like 'biography' = 'life-writing.'

Assessment

Note correct decoding of unfamiliar words using roots, and breadth of word families built.
