Formal Letter Writing
The elementary child preparing for Going Out needs formal letters — to request a visit, an interview, a tour. The letter is practical life at its most grown-up. Sending a real letter and receiving a real reply is the control — and the thrill.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 9-10
Objectives
- Write a formal letter with correct structure (heading, salutation, body, closing, signature)
- Distinguish formal from informal register
- Address an envelope correctly
- Use the letter to request information or arrange a Going Out
Materials
- Stationery or quality paper
- Envelopes
- Pen and pencil
- Sample formal letters (real and model)
- Postage stamps (for real mailing)
Instructions
1. Study a sample formal letter. 2. Identify the parts: sender's address (top right), date, recipient's address (top left), salutation ('Dear Ms. Patel,'), body, closing ('Sincerely,'), signature, printed name. 3. Draft a real letter (a Going Out request is ideal). 4. Revise for clarity and courtesy. 5. Write a final clean copy. 6. Address the envelope with sender's and recipient's addresses. 7. Apply postage. 8. Mail the letter. 9. When a reply arrives, share it with the class.
Educator tip
A real letter to a real person produces a real reply. Every child should mail at least one formal letter in their elementary years.
Assessment
Note structure, tone, courtesy, and whether a Going Out follows.
