Technology Exploration

To develop understanding of how everyday technology works through exploration.

Objectives

Instructions

Introduce technology purposefully rather than leaving it out for free exploration initially. 'This is a torch. Watch what happens when I push this button.' Demonstrate the on/off function clearly.

Give children time to experiment with the torch. Where does the light go? What happens when you point it at different things? 'Can you find your shadow with the torch?' Extend learning through playful investigation.

Introduce cameras by first showing your own photos: 'I took a picture of the garden. Look—I can see the flowers!' Then demonstrate taking a photo: 'Press the button, and click! Now the picture is saved.'

Let children take their own photos with supervision. Value their choices of subject matter: 'You took a photo of your shoes! Why did you choose that?' Display their photos to show you value their perspective.

Discuss how technology helps us. 'The torch helps us see in the dark. When might we need that?' Connect to real-life uses that children understand.

Extend vocabulary naturally: 'That's the button. Push the button to turn it on. The switch makes it work.' Use correct terminology while keeping explanations simple.
