Instructions
Begin with children's own homes. 'What does your home look like? Is it a house or a flat? What colour is your front door?' Value all types of homes equally.
Create a display of different homes—houses, flats, bungalows, caravans, houseboats. 'People live in all sorts of different homes! This is a houseboat—some people live on the water!'
Look at the local area on maps and aerial photos. 'Can you find our nursery? Here it is! And here's the road outside.' Help children begin to understand representations of real places.
Build homes and streets in small world or construction. 'What does your street have on it? Shall we build some houses and a shop?' Encourage children to recreate their environment.
Discuss what's in the local area. 'What's near your home? A park? A shop? The library?' Create a class map showing where everyone lives and local features.
Walk to local landmarks and discuss them. 'This is our community centre. People come here to meet and do activities together.' Help children feel connected to their community.
