Growing and Planting

To understand how plants grow and what they need to survive.

Begin by showing children different seeds, comparing sizes and shapes. 'These tiny cress seeds will grow into plants we can eat! These bigger ones are sunflower seeds—they'll grow very tall!'

Guide children through the planting process step by step. 'First, we put soil in the pot. Then we make a little hole for the seed. Now we cover it gently and give it water.' Let children do as much as possible themselves.

Establish a daily routine for plant care. 'Our seeds need water every day. Let's check if the soil is dry.' Feel the soil together: 'It feels dry, so we need to water it.'

Create a growth diary with daily observations. 'What do you notice about our seeds today? I can see a tiny green shoot! Let's draw it.' Document changes over time.

When growth happens, celebrate and discuss: 'Look! A leaf has appeared! The sun and water helped it grow.' Make connections to what plants need: light, water, warmth.

Extend learning by comparing plants in different conditions. 'Let's put one plant in the dark and one in the light. What do you think will happen?' Observe and discuss the results.
