Instructions
Plan celebrations authentically by involving families from relevant backgrounds. 'Priya's family celebrates Diwali. Priya's mum is coming to tell us about it!' Ensure children with those backgrounds feel proud, not othered.
Introduce celebrations through high-quality books and stories. 'This book is about Eid. Let's find out what happens during this special time!' Choose books that show celebrations as lived experiences, not tourist views.
Create hands-on experiences: making decorations, trying food, learning songs or dances. 'In China, people eat dumplings for Chinese New Year. Let's try making some!' Engage multiple senses.
Discuss similarities between celebrations. 'At Diwali, families get together and share food. What do your families do when you celebrate together?' Help children find connections.
Be careful not to tokenise cultures. Celebrate throughout the year, not just during the 'obvious' festival time. Explore everyday life in different cultures, not just special occasions.
Create displays that children contribute to. 'What shall we put on our celebration display? Bring things from home that show your family's celebrations!' Value all family traditions equally.
