Instructions
Prepare children for the hunt with a discussion: 'Today we're going to look for tiny creatures called mini beasts. Where do you think they might hide?' Accept all suggestions and plan where to look.
Model careful, gentle behaviour: 'We need to look very quietly and carefully so we don't scare them. Mini beasts are small and delicate, so we must be gentle.' Demonstrate lifting logs and replacing them carefully.
When mini beasts are found, observe together with magnifying glasses. 'Look at the woodlouse! Can you see its tiny legs? Count them with me—one, two, three...' Encourage close observation.
Use identification cards to name creatures: 'This looks like a snail! See the spiral shell? That's its home that it carries on its back!' Share interesting facts in simple terms.
Ensure creatures are returned safely to their habitat. 'The spider lives under this log. Let's put the log back carefully so it has its home back.' Model respect for all living things.
After the hunt, discuss findings: 'What did we find? Where did we find them?' Create a display or book about 'Mini Beasts We Found' with children's drawings and photos.
