Instructions
Plan the walk with a purpose in mind, but remain flexible to children's interests. Before setting out, talk about what you might see: 'We're going to walk to the park. What do you think we'll see on the way?'
Walk at a child's pace, stopping frequently to observe and discuss. 'Look at that red post box! That's where we put letters. Have you ever posted a letter?' Connect features to children's experiences.
Point out different buildings and their purposes: 'This is the library. People come here to borrow books.' 'That's the bakery—can you smell the bread?' Use all senses to explore the community.
Encourage children to notice and ask questions. 'What do you see? Why do you think that's there?' When children point things out, validate their observations: 'You noticed the traffic lights! Yes, they help cars know when to stop.'
Collect natural treasures (leaves, feathers, stones) to bring back and explore further. 'Let's collect some things we find and look at them closely when we get back.'
After the walk, revisit the experience with photos and discussion. Create a display or book about 'Our Community Walk.' 'Remember when we saw the fire station? Here's the photo you took!'
