Finding patterns in real environments helps children understand that patterns exist everywhere, connecting mathematical concepts to daily life.

Materials

Instructions
Children walk around and search for patterns, raising hands and describing patterns they find.
Educator tip
Take photos of found patterns to create a class 'Pattern Detective' display.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher observation of student's ability to find and identify patterns.
