Multi-sensory letter activities support phonemic awareness and letter recognition through tactile engagement.

Objectives

• Identify letters in the alphabet
• Recite the alphabet
• Identify beginning letter sounds

Materials

• Brown bags
• Magnet letters

Instructions

Children receive bags with magnet letters and hold up correct letters when called out by the teacher.

Educator tip

Use letters that are most commonly confused (b/d, p/q) to provide targeted practice.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher observation of student's ability to identify letters.
