Block Patterns
Block play builds spatial reasoning while providing a concrete context for pattern exploration and mathematical thinking.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Shapes and Patterns
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS 3-4, Reception
Objectives
- Create patterns using three-dimensional objects
- Group and identify blocks by attributes
- Extend and duplicate patterns
Materials
- Blocks of various colours, sizes, and shapes
Instructions
Children create, extend, and duplicate patterns using blocks, describing their pattern units.
Educator tip
Take photos of children's block patterns before cleanup to create a class pattern book.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher observation of student's ability to create patterns using blocks as well as group and identify blocks according to attributes.
