Bead Pattern
Pattern creation builds foundational algebraic thinking while strengthening fine motor skills through purposeful manipulation of materials.

Objectives
- Create patterns using concrete materials

- Develop fine motor skills through beading
Materials
- Assortment of beads in various colours and shapes
- String or pipe cleaners
Instructions
Children create patterns by threading beads onto string, describing their pattern unit and extending it.
Educator tip
Use pipe cleaners for younger children as they are easier to thread than string.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher observation of student's ability to follow directions and create a pattern using beads.
