Instructions
CREATING THE COURSE: Set up a simple obstacle course with 4-6 elements: a tunnel to crawl through, stepping stones to cross, a low beam to walk along, hoops to jump in, a small climb. Make it achievable but challenging.
INTRODUCING SAFELY: Walk children through the course first: 'First we crawl through the tunnel. Then we step on the stones. Watch me!' Demonstrate each obstacle. Let children watch before trying.
POSITIONING YOURSELF: Stand where you can supervise the whole course, but also where you can quickly reach children who need help. Be ready to spot at climbing elements.
ENCOURAGING RISK-TAKING: Let children challenge themselves within safe limits. If they want to try jumping from the bench, that's appropriate risk. Guide: 'Bend your knees when you land!' Rather than 'Don't do that!'
USING MOVEMENT VOCABULARY: Narrate movements: 'You're crawling LOW through the tunnel. Now you're stepping UP onto the stones. You're balancing—one foot, then the other!'
ADAPTING DIFFICULTY: Make it easier or harder as needed. Lower the beam for beginners; add more stepping stones for confident movers. Every child should be challenged at their level.
CELEBRATING EFFORT: Praise the trying, not just completing: 'You kept going even when it was wobbly! That's persistence!' Cheer at the finish: 'You did the whole course!'
VARYING THE COURSE: Change elements regularly to maintain interest and develop different skills. Let children help set up the course—they love choosing what comes next!
