OFFERING GENUINE CHOICE: Present a range of objects and let babies choose freely. Don't direct them to specific items. 'There are lots of interesting things here. What catches your eye?'

STANDING BACK: During heuristic play, resist the urge to show babies what to do. Sit nearby and observe. Your quiet presence provides security while their independent exploration builds confidence.

OBSERVING CAREFULLY: Notice what babies choose, how long they concentrate, what schemas they explore (transporting, enveloping, connecting). These observations inform your understanding of each child.

CELEBRATING AGENCY: When babies make choices, affirm: 'You chose the wooden spoon! You knew exactly what you wanted!' This builds their sense of being a competent person who can make decisions.
