3D Construction and Modelling
To develop creativity and problem-solving through 3D construction.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Expressive Arts & Design
- Learning area: Expressive Arts and Design
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Plans and creates 3D constructions
- Uses various joining techniques
- Solves construction problems
- Creates representations in 3D
Materials
- Junk modelling materials (boxes, tubes, cartons)
- Clay and air-drying clay
- Joining resources (tape, glue, string, split pins)
- Tools (scissors, hole punches, staplers)
Instructions
Gather an appealing collection of 'junk' materials—boxes, tubes, pots, fabric scraps. Sort and display them attractively. 'Look at all these materials! I wonder what you could make?'
Teach children to use tools safely and effectively. 'The hole punch makes holes—push down hard! Now you can put a split pin through to join these boxes.' Build skills progressively.
Support problem-solving without solving for them. 'The box won't stay on? Hmm, what could we try? What about more tape? Or maybe a different position?' Encourage children to find solutions.
Discuss designs and intentions. 'What are you making? Tell me about your plan.' Some children know exactly what they want; others discover as they go. Both are valid approaches.
Introduce techniques when needed. 'Watch how I score the card so it bends smoothly... like this. Now you try!' Offer demonstrations at point of need.
Value process and product. 'You worked so hard on that! I saw you try three different ways to attach the wheel before it worked. That's great problem-solving!' Celebrate effort and creativity.
