Storytelling Through Drama

To develop narrative skills and dramatic expression.

Instructions

Read and discuss stories that lend themselves to drama—with clear characters, simple plots, and repeated phrases. 'Shall we act out The Three Little Pigs? Who wants to be a pig?'

Create a story-friendly space with basic props and costumes. 'Here are the masks for the wolf and pigs, and we can use these boxes as the houses.' Keep it simple—children's imagination fills gaps.

Support children to take on roles. 'You're the wolf! What does the wolf say? I'll huff and I'll puff! Show me your fierce wolf face!' Help them inhabit characters.

Narrate as children act. 'And so the little pig walked along the road—very scared—looking for somewhere to build a house...' Your narration links scenes together.

Encourage children to vary the story. 'What if this time the wolf was nice? What might happen?' Value creative adaptations alongside traditional versions.

Build toward simple performances for others. 'Shall we show the other children our story at circle time?' Even informal sharing builds confidence and celebration.
