Dino Songs and Shadows

Shadow play stimulates visual tracking and introduces light exploration in a safe, playful way.

Objectives

• Recognise light and shadow changes
• Interact with hand motions
• Focus on projected shapes

Materials

• Flashlight
• Wall or sheet backdrop
• Shadow puppets or cutouts

Instructions

Use a flashlight to project simple shapes. Move slowly and narrate the shapes. Let children reach or point.

Educator tip

Turn off overhead lights to enhance clarity and avoid over-stimulation.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Watch for tracking with eyes or hand motions toward shadows.
