- Safe real tools (stethoscope, flashlight, magnifying glass, bandages)
- Investigation journals
Instructions
1. Set up a 'tool station' with safe real items.
2. Let children explore freely first.
3. Ask: 'What do you notice? How might this help people?'
4. Draw observations in investigation journals.
5. Share discoveries with the class.
Educator tip
Invite a real helper to explain their tools if possible.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Evaluate curiosity, observation detail, and ability to hypothesize tool use.
