Recognising safety signs builds environmental awareness and pre-reading skills.

Objectives
- Identify and explain the meaning of 5-6 common safety signs
Materials
- Sign flashcards (stop, exit, hospital, fire extinguisher)
- Classroom sign hunt
Instructions
1. Introduce signs one at a time with meaning.
2. Go on a classroom/school sign hunt.
3. Discuss which helper might use each sign.
4. Create a class sign book with photos.
5. Play 'What does this sign mean?' game.
Educator tip
Connect signs to real-life experiences: 'Remember when we saw the stop sign?'
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Track number of signs correctly identified and explained.
