Muddy Puddle Commentary
To develop descriptive language and exclamatory expression through outdoor puddle and mud play.

Materials
- Outdoor area with puddles or water tray
- Wellies, waterproof suits
- Buckets, spades, funnels
- Natural materials (sticks, leaves)
Instructions
Jump in alongside them! Model expressive language: 'Splaaaash! That was a BIG splash! The water went everywhere! My wellies are so wet!'
Describe textures: 'The mud is squelchy between my fingers! It's cold and slimy. How does yours feel?' Wait for children to find their own words.
Narrate actions: 'You're stirring the mud with a stick. It's going round and round. You're making muddy soup! What's in your soup?'
Use comparative language: 'This puddle is deep! That one was shallow. Which puddle made the biggest splash?'
