Big Top Counting
Counting circus objects builds one-to-one correspondence and number recognition.

Objectives
- Students will count circus items up to 10 with one-to-one correspondence.
- Students will match quantities to numerals.
Materials
- Circus figurines (clowns, elephants, lions)
- Number cards 1-10
- Sorting trays
Instructions
1. Display circus figurines and number cards.
2. Ask students to count specific items and find the matching number.
3. Create sets of circus items to match each numeral.
4. Practise counting forward and backward.
Educator tip
Use tactile counting—have children touch each item as they count.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Evaluate one-to-one correspondence and numeral recognition up to 10.
