- A portable music player or a smartphone with a speaker.
- A selection of upbeat, rhythmic international folk music tracks.
- Floor cushions or carpet squares to define the seating area.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate the ability to pass an object to a peer while sitting in a circle.
- Practise listening for auditory cues to start and stop an action.
- Develop turn-taking skills within a group setting.
- Follow simple verbal instructions regarding game boundaries.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange the children in a circle on the floor cushions.
2. Explain that the ball is a hot potato that must be passed quickly to a friend.
3. Model the passing motion by handing the ball to the child on your right.
4. Demonstrate how to hold the ball with two hands to ensure a steady pass.
5. Start the music and encourage the children to pass the ball around the circle.
6. Stop the music abruptly after ten seconds to signal that the game is paused.
7. Remind the children that whoever holds the ball when the music stops must hold it still until the music resumes.
8. Encourage the children to cheer for their friends when they receive the ball.
9. Continue the game for several rounds to ensure every child has a chance to hold the ball.
10. Conclude the activity by having the children place the ball in a designated basket.
Educator Tip
If children struggle to pass the ball, slow the tempo of the music to match their pace. If the group becomes overly excited, pause the game to practise deep breathing before resuming. This helps children regulate their energy levels while maintaining the structure of the activity.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can successfully pass the object to the peer sitting next to them.
- Note whether the child stops the passing motion when the music ceases.
- Record if the child waits for their turn without grabbing the ball from others.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
