Instructions
Materials
- Large map of the world printed on durable vinyl or laminated cardstock.
- Pre-cut flag of Mexico made from thick felt or heavy cardstock.
- Non-toxic, child-safe adhesive dots or reusable putty.
- Small basket containing sensory items related to Mexico, such as a maraca or a small sombrero.
- Printed photos of Mexican landscapes or colorful patterns.
Learning Objectives
- Recognise the flag of Mexico as a distinct visual symbol.
- Develop fine motor skills by placing an object onto a specific surface.
- Respond to simple verbal cues about geography and location.
- Engage in sensory exploration of cultural objects.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Lay the large world map flat on the floor in a quiet, carpeted area.
2. Gather the toddlers in a small circle around the map.
3. Show the children the Mexican flag and name the country clearly.
4. Allow the children to touch the fabric or cardstock flag to explore its texture.
5. Point to the location of Mexico on the large world map.
6. Model how to place the flag onto the map using the adhesive dots.
7. Invite each toddler to take a turn placing the flag on the map with your physical assistance if needed.
8. Shake the maraca or show the sombrero to provide a sensory connection to the country.
9. Encourage the children to repeat the word Mexico after you.
10. Conclude the activity by praising their participation and moving to a transition song.
Educator Tip
Toddlers have short attention spans, so keep the direct instruction to under five minutes. If a child loses interest in the map, allow them to explore the sensory basket items while you continue to narrate the activity for the group. This ensures they remain engaged with the theme through tactile play even if they are not focused on the geography component.
Assessment
- Observe if the child attempts to place the flag on the map independently.
- Note if the child shows interest in the visual or auditory stimuli provided.
- Record whether the child responds to the name of the country when spoken aloud.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Participation, imitation, early vocabulary attempts.
