Mexico Mapping & Flag

Level 1 builds foundational geography and cultural awareness. 'Mexico Mapping & Flag' reinforces identity and belonging.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large outline map of Mexico printed on heavy cardstock.

- Pre-cut green, white, and red tissue paper squares.

- Glue sticks or non-toxic liquid glue in small bowls.

- A physical globe or world map showing Mexico.

- Printed images of the Mexican flag.

- Small plastic eagle or snake figurines for sensory exploration.

Learning Objectives

- Identify the flag of Mexico by its distinct colours and central emblem.

- Practise fine motor skills by tearing or placing small paper pieces.

- Recognise that Mexico is a specific country located on a global map.

- Follow multi-step directions to complete a collaborative or individual project.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather students in a circle and show them the globe. Point to Mexico and explain that it is a country far away from where they live.

2. Display the printed image of the Mexican flag. Ask students to name the colours they see.

3. Explain that the flag has three vertical stripes and a special picture in the middle.

4. Distribute the cardstock maps to each student.

5. Demonstrate how to apply a small amount of glue to the map sections.

6. Instruct students to place the green paper on the left, white in the middle, and red on the right to match the flag pattern.

7. Assist students in placing a small sticker or drawing of an eagle in the centre white section to represent the national emblem.

8. Encourage students to talk about the colours as they work to reinforce the sequence.

9. Allow the maps to dry on a flat surface before hanging them in the classroom gallery.

Educator Tip

To support students who struggle with fine motor control, pre-cut the paper into larger shapes or use wider glue sticks. If a child finishes early, provide the plastic animal figurines so they can pretend the eagle is flying over their map to encourage imaginative play.

Assessment

- Observe if the student correctly identifies the three colours of the Mexican flag.

- Note the student ability to follow the sequence of colours during the gluing process.

- Record whether the student can point to Mexico when prompted on the classroom globe.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
