- Pre-cut green, white, and red sugar paper squares

- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors

- Printed reference images of the Mexican flag

- Globe or large world map

- Crayons or markers

Learning Objectives

- Identify Mexico on a globe or world map.

- Recognise the three vertical stripes of the Mexican flag.

- Develop fine motor skills through cutting and pasting.

- Verbalize the name of the country and its geographical location.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display the globe. Point to Mexico and explain that it is a country located south of the United States.

2. Show the children the reference image of the Mexican flag. Discuss the colours green, white, and red.

3. Distribute the printed map outlines to each student.

4. Demonstrate how to hold scissors correctly to cut the sugar paper into smaller pieces.

5. Instruct the children to glue the green pieces on the left side of their flag, white in the middle, and red on the right.

6. Encourage students to colour the remaining space on their map outline once the flag is complete.

7. Circulate the room to assist children with glue application and colour placement.

8. Ask each child to point to Mexico on the map and name the country aloud.

9. Display the completed maps on a classroom wall to create a collective map of the world.

Educator Tip

To support children who struggle with fine motor tasks, provide pre-cut paper squares in the three required colours. If a student finishes early, encourage them to draw a small cactus or a sombrero on their map to represent cultural symbols associated with Mexico.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly identify Mexico on the globe when prompted.

- Note the child's ability to sequence the three colours of the flag correctly.

- Evaluate the child's fine motor control during the cutting and gluing process.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
