Level 1 builds foundational geography and cultural awareness. 'Passports Project' reinforces identity and belonging.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Small booklets made of folded sugar paper

- Washable ink stamp pads and assorted rubber stamps

- Child-safe glue sticks and pre-cut paper shapes

- Printed photographs of the children

- Crayons and washable markers

- A globe or world map

Learning Objectives

- Identify the concept of a passport as a tool for international travel.

- Practise fine motor skills by stamping, gluing, and colouring.

- Recognise that people live in different places around the world.

- Follow multi-step directions to complete a personal project.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and show them a globe. Explain that people use passports to visit different countries.

2. Distribute the sugar paper booklets to each child.

3. Assist children in gluing their photograph onto the inside front cover of their booklet.

4. Model how to write their name on the cover using markers or crayons.

5. Set up stations around the room representing different countries, such as a France station with a picture of the Eiffel Tower or a Japan station with a cherry blossom image.

6. Invite children to walk to each station.

7. Demonstrate how to press a stamp into the ink pad and then onto a page in their passport.

8. Encourage children to decorate their pages with the provided paper shapes and colours.

9. Guide children to compare their passports with peers to see the different stamps they collected.

10. Store the completed passports in a designated classroom area for future travel-themed activities.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles with the concept of travel, focus the discussion on the idea of visiting a friend or a new park. You can differentiate this activity by pre-stamping pages for children who need extra support with motor control or by asking older children to draw a simple picture of what they see at each station.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can successfully use the stamp tool with minimal assistance.

- Note whether the child can identify their own photograph on the passport cover.

- Record if the child participates in the transition between stations to collect stamps.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
