Passports Project
Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'Passports Project' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Internationalism
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse similarities/differences among countries
- Justify thinking
- Extend with writing, mapping, or data graph
Instructions
Materials
- Pre-cut cardstock booklets to serve as passports.
- Self-adhesive labels or small printed stickers representing different countries.
- Ink pads and rubber stamps featuring global icons like airplanes or globes.
- Child-safe glue sticks and safety scissors.
- Printed photographs of the students for their passport identification page.
- Crayons and coloured pencils for personalizing covers.
Learning Objectives
- Students will identify the purpose of a passport as a tool for international travel.
- Students will practise fine motor skills by placing stickers and stamps within designated areas.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of personal identity by completing their own identification page.
- Students will recognise that people travel to different places around the world.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the class in a circle and show a real passport or a high-quality image of one. Explain that it is a special book used to visit other countries.
2. Distribute the cardstock booklets and ask students to write their names on the front cover.
3. Guide students to glue their photograph onto the first page and assist them in writing their birth date or drawing a self-portrait.
4. Explain that as they learn about new countries in the coming weeks, they will earn a stamp or sticker for each location.
5. Set up stations with different country stickers and stamps.
6. Invite students to move to the stations to decorate their first few pages.
7. Model how to use the stamp pad carefully to ensure a clear image on the paper.
8. Encourage students to discuss where they might want to travel one day while they work.
9. Collect the passports in a designated classroom bin to keep them safe for future lessons.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for students who are still developing fine motor control, use larger stickers that are easier to peel. If a student finishes early, ask them to draw a picture of a mode of transportation, such as a boat or train, on the back cover of their passport.
Assessment
- Observe if the student can correctly place their photograph on the identification page.
- Note whether the student can explain the function of a passport during a brief one-on-one check-in.
- Evaluate the student's ability to follow multi-step directions during the assembly process.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
