World Mapping Activity

Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'World Mapping Activity' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large, soft floor mat or play area

- Inflatable globe or soft fabric ball with world map print

- High-contrast images of diverse landscapes like mountains, oceans, and forests

- Soft sensory blankets or textured fabrics

- Shallow tray with blue water-based paint for sensory exploration

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate visual tracking by following the movement of the globe.

- Engage in sensory exploration by touching different textures representing land and water.

- Respond to teacher vocalizations about the world through cooing or physical movement.

- Develop fine motor skills through grasping and reaching for the globe.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare a clean, safe space on the floor with a soft mat to ensure comfort for infants.

2. Gather the infants in a circle or semi-circle, ensuring each child has enough personal space to move.

3. Introduce the soft globe by rolling it slowly across the floor toward the infants.

4. Encourage the infants to reach out, touch, or track the globe as it moves near them.

5. Narrate the activity using simple, gentle language such as "This is our world" or "Look at the blue water."

6. Present the high-contrast images one by one, holding them at a distance of 8 to 12 inches from the infants.

7. Describe the images briefly, focusing on sensory words like "cold water" or "soft grass."

8. Allow infants to touch the textured fabrics to associate different feelings with the land and water concepts.

9. Conclude the activity by gently rocking the infants while holding the globe to reinforce a calm, positive association with the environment.

Educator Tip

Keep the session brief, as infants have limited attention spans for structured activities. If an infant becomes overstimulated or disinterested, transition immediately to a quiet sensory activity or individual play to maintain a positive learning environment.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant tracks the globe with their eyes as it moves.

- Note if the infant reaches for or attempts to grasp the globe or texture samples.

- Record any vocalizations or physical responses that occur when the teacher names different parts of the world.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
